Like many Americans, I’ve been absolutely stressed out with the election this week. It’s been even more distressing seeing just how close of a presidential race it actually was.
We were optimistic for more of a gap between the two candidates. We were optimistic that the American people, as a whole, would denounce the racist and sexist party that utterly failed our country during the pandemic. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
However, change is happening. More and more women, people of color, different sexualities and gender identities are being elected in our government. It is the silver lining of the past four years.
New Mexico is the first state to elect all women of color in the House of Representatives.
Two gay, Black men in New York districts — Mondaire Jones and Ritchie Torres — are heading to the House of Representatives, giving much needed representation for both LGBTQ+ and people of color in our highest form of government.
The state of Delaware made history by electing Sarah McBride as the first transgender state senator in the nation.
The face of our government is changing, has been changing for the past four years. Those at the highest form of government are reflecting the people better now more than ever.
We’re going to keep going. We’re going to keep growing and fighting for the diversity that truly makes us as a country beautiful and strong.
Of course, with all this nail-biting talk of the elections around the country, we could do with something a little lighter, right? There’s one more election that I wanted to touch base on.
In Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, the new mayor is Wilbur Beast… a French Bulldog.
While the dapper pup obviously won’t be overseeing the daily operations of Rabbit Hash — I imagine it’s a bit difficult to do without opposable thumbs — the election of a dog as mayor is Rabbit Hash’s biggest fundraiser that ensures the hamlet town’s preservation and upkeep.
Considering a dog’s platform probably runs on promises of loyalty, regular breaks for both exercise and down time, and frequent treats and praise, I can get behind more canine officials in this country.
